Contributor Betty Slowe (Description). Tarwater followed superintendents, Dr. Peter Bryce, ; Dr. T.J. Searcy, ; and Dr. W.D. Parlow, as superintendent of Alabama State Hospitals and Partlow State School. Dr. James Sidney Tarwater retired in 1970. He joined the staff at Bryce Hospital as staff physician in 1924. In 1945, he was appointed assistant superintendent where he served until 1950 when he was appointed Superintendent of Alabama State Hospitals and Partlow State Schools. Description James Sidney Tarwater was widely recognized as an outstanding authority on mental Illness. Tarwater attended public schools in Walker County and earned a B.S. degree at the University of Alabama before attending medical school at the University of Tennessee, receiving his M.D. degree in 1923.
